Myrtle Beach and Dustin Johnson, the No. 1 player in the world, have always enjoyed a close relationship. DJ went to school at Coastal Carolina, lived and trained at TPC Myrtle Beach for years (he still keeps trophies at the course), and his namesake golf school is based here.
Doubling down on his commitment to growing the game, he launched the Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship and hosts the event at (surprise!) TPC Myrtle Beach. In 2017, just days after winning at Riviera and earning the top spot in the Official World Golf Rankings, Johnson appeared at his junior tournament in Myrtle Beach, delighting 100+ young golfers.
He brought his U.S. Open trophy to the event and every tournament participant got a picture taken with DJ and our national championship’s trophy. The Golf Channel was on-hand for his appearance, bringing a national audience to Myrtle Beach and one of the game’s fastest rising junior events.
Throw in idyllic weather – 80 degrees in February – and pair of deserving winners, Georgia commitment Trent Phillips on the boys side and future South Carolina Gamecock Skylar Thompson in the girls event, and the second annual Dustin Johnson World Junior Golf Championship was unforgettable.
